From Ready at Dawn, the studio that gave us fantastic experiences like Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, comes the brand new IP The Order:1886 exclusively for the PS4. Officially announced at E3 2013 to general excitement, hype seems to have died down a little over the following months. Without a shred of gameplay and only a single trailer to go on fans grew restless waiting for the next big update. That day has finally come. While not the massive gameplay reveal we hoped for RaD finally released some early footage of the game in action.
All footage in the video is in-game and looks quite remarkable. The level of graphical fidelity they have managed to achieve is very impressive. The transitions from cutscene to gameplay were seamless and the animations were spot on. Not to say that the game does not have its flaws. Evidenced by the short snippet the clip provides us with there are a few technical issues that still need to be dealt with. Some lighting and clipping was clearly visible though there is no doubt in my mind that will be fixed in the final product.
Judging from the gameplay ‘The Order’ looks to be a mix between Gears of War and God of War with a Victorian flavour mixed in to spice things up. I am a huge fan of Victorian literature and the GoW series (both of them) so this has definitely piqued my interest.
Ru Weerasuriya (Co-founder of RaD) calls the thematic core of the game “neo-Victorian” to purposely distinguish itself from the over flooded “steampunk” genre. While they do share many similarities I can see where he is coming from. The aesthetic is clearly rooted in Victorian culture. From the clothing to the architecture, everything screams English.
From the above footage and details I think there is a lot to look forward. While nothing yet is clearly “next gen” in terms of gameplay ‘The Order: 1886’ looks to mesh the TPS and action genres well in a beautifully rendered package. As long as they can tighten up some of the technical aspects and deliver on the deep melee system I think they have a hit on their hands.
For the latest on all things ‘The Order’ keep it locked. And don’t be afraid to comment!
