Following in the footsteps of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ comes the live action reimagining of the classic fairytale ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Maleficent’. Featuring the acting chops of Angelina Jolie (the titular Maleficent) and Sharlto Copley (King Stefan) this live action take on the fairy tale does seem to have a lot going for it. All trailers, including this one, have painted a quite grim picture of the children’s story, featuring fantastical creatures, giant dragons and epic battles. With the caliber behind this picture and the quality effects from the marketing ‘Maleficent’ has me excited to see what this movie is all about.
Other attempts at reworking classic Disney films have been hit and miss. Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was a little too dreary and bland for my tastes (though the Jabberwocky was pretty cool). ‘Snow White & the Huntsman’ was a run of the mill action film that went on a little too long and I passed on Oz (though I should probably see it considering its gotten the best reviews out of the aforementioned). Whether or not this movie ultimately bucks that trend is yet to be determined but if the trailers are anything to go by audiences will be in for a treat.
Attempting to paint the dark fairy, Maleficent, in a more sympathetic light, Disney and director Robert Stromberg are telling the true tale of the sleeping beauty. ‘Maleficent’ hits theatres worldwide on May 30th, 2014.
