A year after the 20th anniversary of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comes word that Rangers creator Haim Saban and production company Lionsgate have reached a deal to bring the legendary team to the big screen once again. Lionsgate, the company behind big franchises like Saw and The Hunger Games, seems like a great fit for the team. With a strong history with unique and interesting franchises I believe the Power Rangers are in good hands. By the sounds of the official release it does seem like they are going for a reboot of the series. Here are some excerpts by owner Haim Saban and Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer;
“Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.” – Haim Saban (Owner/creator of the Power Rangers)
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise. The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.” – John Feltheimer (CEO of Lionsgate Entertainment)
Fox released 2 Power Rangers films in the 90’s but neither took off like the recent Transformers franchise. Through its long history on both the small and silver screen there have been numerous adaptations and versions of the titular team. It is yet to be determined exactly which team Lionsgate will adapt for this new film and if it will have any connection to the current run on television.
