A ‘New Warrior’ and a demi-god walked into SHIELD… If the rumors turn out to be true, what sounds like the beginning of a really crappy joke may just become a reality. According to the fine folks over at OhNoTheyDidnt Fran Kranz, a regular Whedonverse personality, may be gearing up to play none other than Robbie Baldwin, also known as Speedball!
On September 24th Kranz wrote a very tantalizing tweet seemingly confirming his involvement in the second season of ‘Agents of SHIELD’. The tweet was taken down almost immediately but nothing escapes the vigilance of the internet! Take a look at the tweet in question;
As any follower of AoS knows Mockingbird, or Bobbi Morse, will be making her MCU debut in a few short weeks (played by the beautiful and talented Adrianne Palicki). If Kranz’s tweet is anything to go by we will also be seeing Robbie Baldwin, or Speedball, show up as well. For those of you not in the know, Robbie Baldwin was blasted with a wave of interdimensional energy in a freak accident that granted him the ability to create a shield of kinetic energy whenever something harms him. He eventually went on to join the ranks of the New Warriors who played an integral role in events like Civil War.
If this rumor is to be believed it speaks a lot towards the effort the showrunners are putting in to appeasing the naysayers of the first season. A major point of contention with fans was that the show felt flat with its lack of powered and recognizable characters. We have already seen the Absorbing Man (Brian Patrick Wade) and Mockingbird is on the way, not to mention the increased HYDRA presence and Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond). Adding a talent like Fran Kranz as Speedball will go a long way in legitimizing AoS as a proper superhero show in the eyes of fans and brings another phenomenal actor into the fold, that’s winning for everybody.
But wait! That’s not all there is from rumorland. According to the official Marvel press release the fourth episode of the second season will feature an appearance by a character known as Agent 33. To most this would seem like a throwaway character but to a comic savant (which I am not, this took a lot of internet scouring) they would instantly recognize Agent 33 as the SHIELD agent responsible for the recruitment of none other than Hercules! Back in February the show-runners conducted and interview with Zap2It and had this to say on the topic of otherworldly characters, “they’ve discussed taking their SHIELD agents to fictional Marvel worlds,” but specified that “they’re gong to roll out new universes slowly as they want the characters to fully exist in their own world first.” We have already seen hints of other worlds in the form of Asgard and the dimension hopping villain from the first seasons Halloween episode so Herc is not entirely implausible at this point.
Whether or not either of these rumors turns out to be true is still up in the air but both would be huge developments for the show and the larger MCU.
Let me know what you think about Kranz or Herc joining the MCU and don’t forget to check back in to OTL News for all things Marvel and Agents of SHIELD!
