2016 is shaping up to be one heck of a year for comic inspired films. The Channing Tatum vehicle “Gambit” can be seen in theaters October 7th, 2016 and will be the third “X-Men” film released by Fox that year.
In the age of the MCU and the budding DC universe comic book films have become a pretty big deal and with Marvel and Warner Brothers stepping up their output to three films a year, it only makes sense that Fox would follow suit. They have already announced ‘Deadpool’ (starring Ryan Reynolds as the merc’ with a mouth) for February 12, 2016 and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ for May 27, 2016. In a year that will see ‘Batman V Superman’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Sinister Six’, not to mention the screen debut of Doctor Strange, is there enough room for the ragin’ Cajun?
‘Gambit’ will most likely be a ton of fun and if done correctly could be huge for the X-Men franchise in general but can it survive in the already overstuffed 2016? I don’t think so. Yet I’m hoping to be proven wrong. Everyone thought an unknown commodity like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ would wind up a colossal failure yet it ended up claiming the number two spot at the domestic box office for 2014 (darn you Hunger Games!). If Channing Tatum can nail that accent and bring the charm and charisma he’s displayed from 21 Jump Street I have no doubt it will be an enjoyable.
Do you think releasing ‘Gambit’ in 2016 is a good idea? Let me know in the comments below and don’t forget to check back in to OTL News for all things X-Men!
