Premiering March 10th on the Playstation Network (free on PS Plus), Powers tells the story of Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim investigating superhuman related crimes in a world where having “power” means flying and hurling fireballs from your chest. Come take a look behind the scenes of the new show, courtesy of Sony.
Based on the Icon Comic series of the same name (written and drawn by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming) Powers marks Playstation’s first foray into the world of serialized programming. In terms of tone, talent and premise, the production looks pretty promising. Sharlto Copley seems like a perfect fit for the slightly unhinged Christian Walker and Susan Heyward looks more than capable of holding her own.
The above sneak peak offers a look at some of the actors in action as well as the cast and crew sharing their thoughts on the world of Powers. It is an interesting insight into the show and does fill me with a confidence and interest I didn’t have before watching. The only thing that has me hesitant at this point are the visuals. With Brian Michael Bendis heavily involved in bringing this show to life I can understand being faithful to the comics. But the comics are a very different medium in comparison to screen adaptations. Some of the visuals that look fantastic on the page fail to resonate once they make the leap to live-action.

In the comics this look is cool, in real life it just screams Halloween costume. There are plenty more examples to be found within the preview, hopefully the story and performances are strong enough to allow audiences to look past some of the aesthetic decisions.
