In an effort to expand their DC television universe, The CW has begun development on a third superhero series revolving around Arrow and The Flash supporting characters. According to Deadline, Firestorm, ATOM, Captain Cold and the deceased Black Canary are said to all be recurring members. Take a look!
It is looking like Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti will team up once again to bring us a third hero series in their ever evolving DC universe. The report from Deadline states that the show will revolve around fan favorite characters like Firestorm, Atom, Black Canary and Captain Cold. Series regulars Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz and Wentworth Miller are all expected to reprise their roles.
While most of this news makes sense, the only cast member that seems a little hard to explain is Caity Lotz. Any fan of Arrow knows that Lotz’s Sara was murdered, making it a bit tricky to have her in a recurring anything. Details of the show are scarce so the format of the series could turn out to be anything. My mind immediately goes to something along the lines of a collection of short arcs featuring these characters at various times in their lives. It wouldn’t be feasible to have these characters in costume at all times performing epic acts of superheroics, so it stands to reason that the point of this series would be to shine a light on those that tend to fall to the background in the main shows.
This season of Arrow proved that characters like Diggle, Arsenal, Felicity and Laurel can handle their own without the big guys around. The Flash has had a couple of episodes dedicated to characters other than Barry, the latest Firestorm centric piece being a standout. It’s safe to say that these “second string” characters are up to the task, it’s only a question of what stories to tell. A series shifting in and out of each heroes perspective at varying times would be a unique way to get to know these characters while providing a chance for them to strut their stuff. This would also help explain how Caity Lotz would return as Black Canary.
That being said, this is just my speculation. The true format of the series could end up being something completely different. The one thing that remains consistent is that fans will be getting a lot more of their favorite DC heroes and villains.
In addition to the series regulars, Deadline states that we will be seeing 3 new DC characters that have never had a live action counterpart before (my money is on the “Titans” over at TNT). Even without the mystery of the 3 new additions, the series sounds very interesting and if done correctly could prove to be a mainstay program like its CW brethren.
What do you think of the sounds of the new show? Who do you think the 3 major DC characters could be? Let me know in the comments below and don’t forget to check back in to OTL News for all the latest!
