Legacy casting seems to be all the rage these days. What began with Smallville and continued with The Flash, bringing back a number of retro cast members to fill out the supporting cast has now spread to the upcoming Supergirl adaptation on CBS. Original Supergirl Helen Slater has joined the ensemble alongside Dean Cain from the popular drama, Lois and Clark. Hit the jump for more details!
In a report from TV Line, two old school DC character actors are making their return to the comic fold. Helen Slater, the original Supergirl from the 1984 adaptation, and Dean Cain, Lois and Clark’s own Superman, have signed on to play unspecified roles in CBS Supergirl adaptation. Details on who either actor will be playing are not yet available, but given how The Flash has handled its legacy casting, I wouldn’t put it past the producers to have Slater fill the role of Kara’s foster mother.
As for Cain, your guess is as good as mine.
Both actors appeared in the Cw’s Smallville, Slater playing Clark’s Kryptonian mother and Cain playing Dr. Curtis Knox. They join a cast which includes Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El (Kara’s birth mother), Chyler Leigh as Kara’s foster sister Alexandra, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw (aka Cyborg Superman), Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as an older and more assertive Jimmy Olsen, and of course Melissa Benoist as the titular superheroine.
