Hot on the heels of Melissa Benoist’s casting as the titular Supergirl, we now have our second actor to join the project. Star of HBO’s True Blood, Mehcad Brooks is set to play Superman’s best pal and journalist extraordinaire, Jimmy Olsen. Read on for details!
CBS is kicking production of their own DC TV project into high gear. Last week saw Melissa Benoist cast as Kara herself and now the characters around her are beginning to get filled in. True Blood and Desperate Housewives alum Mehcad Brooks has signed on to depict Jimmy Olsen in Supergirl. Hardcore comic fans will be immediately outraged that they didn’t cast a pasty white kid in the role… get over it.
Aside from him looking different when compared to the Jimmy of comic lore, he also seems to be a completely new character with only the name in common with the source material. Here is the description;
“Smart, worldly photographer for CatCo, the media company where Kara works. He has recently been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret, and his salt-of-the-earth nature quickly piques Kara’s interest.”
No Metropolis and no Daily Planet. I don’t mind the changes and think that having nods to broader Superman lore will help keep people invested in the series.
Coming after race changes to Iris West (Candice Patton) and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) it seems like DC has a thing for black journalists. Whatever the case, what do you think of the casting? Yay or nay? Sound off in the comments below and don’t forget to check back in to OTL News for all the latest!

This version of the character is post-Planet and post-“Superman’s Pal;, so, no, they didn’t just slap the name on a brand-new character. They’re just showing him at a new phase in his life.
When I said he seems like a new character I didn’t mean literally. Sure he will have all of the stuff that makes Jimmy Jimmy but from what we know, which is nothing, he doesn’t sound like the guy from the comics. So yes, this may be a new phase in his life but i’m willing to bet he will be a vastly different from the comic incarnation.
This is total garbage. Jimmy’s not black or an aloha male. Black Jimmy. What a joke.
* AlPHA male, not aloha…lol
